Into the Vale has recently been approached to complete, and circulate, a survey by PhD student Samir Soares, regarding energy and fuel usage in rural areas. We hope you will consider helping him in his research.
Thank you for reading this short introduction to my survey on Energy and Fuel Usage in Rural Environments.
I hope that you will consider completing my survey and helping me to understand more fully the decarbonisation challenges people living in rural areas face, when trying to find practical ways to mitigate the impact of climate change on their everyday lives.

My name is Samir Soares and I am a PhD student at the University of Nottingham researching the types of energy for heating, power and transport that people living and working in rural areas currently use and could use in their homes and businesses in the future. My work is being conducted under the guidance of Mark Gillott, Professor of Sustainable Building Design – a leading researcher in this field.
My ultimate goal is to identify viable and practical alternative energy sources to help these populations convert their current rural heat and energy systems to low or zero carbon systems and so address the environmental and climate change challenges we all face.
One essential early task is to establish a baseline understanding of the different fuels people living in rural environments currently use for heating, power and transport. For this, I need a group of volunteers who live in a rural area, have an interest in climate change and decarbonisation, and who are willing to fill in a short survey about their energy and fuel use. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and is in three short sections:
Part One – saying in general terms a little about who you are and where you live.
Part Two – about your attitude to and interest in environmental matters and climate change.
Part Three – describing your energy usage.
All data collected through this survey and any follow up communications will be kept securely and in line with the University of Nottingham data protection policies. The data will be anonymised both for this and in further work or future publications.
Please consider helping me with this research, the findings of which will ultimately be of value to you and your neighbours. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me at Samir.Soares@nottingham.ac.uk
