Garden Party Revival – by Jainy Hopkins

Garden Party Revival – by Jainy Hopkins

27 June 2025 by Sophie Brewill

Ah, the British garden party. A quintessential tradition where delicate sandwiches and polite conversation meet the great outdoors. In a country renowned for its unpredictable weather, the garden party has remained a staple of British social life for centuries and is making a strong comeback in 2025. But this time, it’s got a modern twist that makes it just as relevant today as it was in the past.

The garden party’s origins date back to the 19th century, when the British aristocracy hosted extravagant outdoor events on their sprawling estates. It was a chance to socialise, network, and show off the grandeur of their gardens. The most famous example is the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, a celebration of British society and tradition that continues to this day. But while the royal affair still maintains its old-world charm, garden parties across the country have evolved. The basic principles remain the same, but they now cater to a wider and more diverse audience, embracing a fresh, contemporary vibe.

So, what does the modern garden party look like? For starters, it’s less about the formality and more about creating an inviting atmosphere. Today’s garden party is all about comfort without compromising on style. Think elegant but relaxed – floral dresses paired with comfy sandals or chinos with a crisp shirt – creating a laid-back, yet refined look that suits both the occasion and the season.

Food is another area where tradition meets innovation. While you’ll still find the classic cucumber sandwich and scones with clotted cream, there’s been a significant shift towards catering for modern tastes and dietary requirements. Vegan, gluten-free, and locally sourced options appear on today’s garden party spread – think colourful salads, fresh fruit platters, and a wide selection of delicate pastries, all made with seasonal, sustainable ingredients.

A modern garden party is not just about indulging the taste buds but also about being mindful of the environment. Eco-consciousness has woven its way into the fabric of the garden party. Single-use plastics are being swapped for reusable cups, plates, and cutlery, while eco-friendly party decorations – such as biodegradable balloons and flower garlands – are in high demand. Not only does this reflect the growing emphasis on sustainability, but it also aligns with the values of many modern-day garden party enthusiasts, who are keen to reduce their ecological footprint while still enjoying the pleasures of socialising outdoors.

Entertainment, too, has evolved. While croquet and lawn tennis still make an appearance at some of the more traditional gatherings, many garden parties now feature live music from local bands and lawn games for children and adults alike. The focus is on fun and inclusivity, creating an event that people of all ages can enjoy. For the younger crowd, social media has also played a part in the garden party’s revival. Instagram-worthy set-ups such as colourful picnic blankets, embroidered seat cushions, flower-filled centrepieces, and quirky photo booths are becoming just as important as the food and drinks.

But, despite all these modern twists, the essence of the garden party remains unchanged. It’s about bringing people together in a relaxed, beautiful setting to enjoy good food, great company, and a little slice of British tradition. Whether it’s a birthday celebration, a wedding reception, or a casual Sunday gathering, the garden party continues to evolve while holding on to the core elements that make it such a beloved tradition.

So, grab your hat, your sunscreen, and your favourite garden chair – the garden party is back, and it’s better than ever.
