In times of trouble we all deserve a little something to look forward to. So when the time’s right, what better way to treat yourself than to book a stay in a 12th century family home, in a medieval French village?
This characteristic four-bedroom property sleeps up to 10 people and boasts a beautiful tranquil garden with an abundance of wildlife. All set in a location that is filled with wonderful cheese and wine producers and bordered by fields of sunflowers.
Walking through the secluded door in the wall, it feels like entering a hidden garden. The 900-year-old property has its fair share of rustic charm, with stone walls and a spiral staircase. The house is unique, and is set next to an ancient abbey visited by Richard the Lionheart.
Wild swimming, hiking or just relaxing in the garden are a few of the many ways to pass the time. Another activity is kayaking to the chateau in the neighbouring village of Verteuil-sur-Charente – once the backdrop for a James Martin cookery show. There’s nothing better than sitting on the banks of the picturesque river, drinking coffee and eating brioche whilst watching the kingfishers and otters going about their business.
The village of Nanteuil-en-Vallee itself offers some excellent eateries and the local area is steeped in history from WW2, including the village of Oradour-sur- Glane. There are two wildlife parks, tree top nets and an inflatable obstacle course on the nearby lake for the more adventurous. The towns of Cognac and Angouleme are close by – the latter is the backdrop for Wes Anderson’s new film – The French Dispatch – due out in October.
The journey there is a short flight from East Midlands airport to Limoges, and then an easy one-hour drive to the village. Or take the Eurotunnel or ferry and start your trip with a drive through the beautiful French countryside.
You can view and book the property through AIR BNB (Property ref: 40675959 – 12th century house in heart of beautiful village). If you mention you saw us in Into the Vale magazine, then we’ll add a little something extra to your welcome pack!
