Trichology: A Scientific Study of the Hair & Scalp

Trichology: A Scientific Study of the Hair & Scalp

30 October 2025 by Sophie Brewill

Whilst hairstyling focuses on the aesthetics of hair, trichology delves deeper into the health and biology of both hair and scalp.

A trichologist examines the underlying causes of hair and scalp conditions, from hair loss and thinning to dandruff, scalp sensitivity and various other concerns that can affect confidence and well-being.

The condition of your hair is often a telltale sign that something isn’t quite right. Changes in hair growth, texture or scalp condition shouldn’t be ignored, as they can indicate underlying health issues such as stress,  nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances or thyroid problems. Trichology takes a holistic approach, considering lifestyle, diet, medical history and environmental factors to identify the root cause of problems and develop effective treatment plans. By paying attention to what your hair is telling you, concerns can be addressed before they become serious.

Common hair and scalp concerns

One of the most common concerns is hair loss or thinning, which can be particularly distressing. Another is persistent dandruff or an itchy, flaky scalp that don’t respond to regular shampoos. Many women notice changes in their hair texture, density or growth patterns during different life stages, such as after pregnancy, during menopause or periods of high stress. Men often experience concerns around male pattern baldness, receding hairlines or sudden hair thinning, which can begin as early as their twenties and thirties.

Many people are unaware of how interconnected our hair health is with our overall well-being. For instance, crash dieting and certain medications can impact the condition of your hair and scalp. Sometimes, what appears to be a simple cosmetic issue may require a deeper investigation into underlying health factors. This is where trichology becomes invaluable, bridging the gap between beauty and health.

The confidence connection

It’s impossible to underestimate the impact that healthy hair has on our confidence and mental well-being. Hair loss or scalp problems can make you feel anxious about your appearance and self-conscious in social situations. Conversely, helping someone resolve their hair or scalp issues can result in a transformation that goes far beyond the physical. The relief and joy of seeing improvement, of feeling comfortable in  your own skin is truly rewarding. Hair is so much more than just aesthetics, it’s intrinsically linked to how we feel about ourselves and how we present ourselves to the world. Addressing hair and scalp health concerns isn’t vanity; it’s an important aspect of self-care and overall well-being.
