Our canine friends enjoy a sweet treat just as much as we do! Lots of us love to treat our dogs, but making a cake for your dog may not be as simple as it sounds – some of the common ingredients we use are potentially dangerous or toxic for our pooches and it’s important to consider the high amount of calories in cake that could contribute towards pet obesity. So why not try this delicious doggy-safe (and human safe!) cake that can be frozen for your pooch to enjoy as healthy-sized portions over several months.
INGREDIENTS:
· 50g margarine or coconut oil
· 20g honey
· 1-2 bananas, peeled and mashed
· 1 egg
· 75g plain flour
· 0.5tsp cinnamon (optional)
WHAT TO DO:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
2. Separate the eggs into whites and yolks.
3. Whisk the egg whites with half of the honey until they’re form stiff peaks.
4. In a separate bowl, combine the honey and margarine or coconut oil until smooth, then add the mashed bananas, egg yolks and sieve in the flour.
5. Gently combine the egg white mix with the honey mix.
6. Divide into cake cases and bake for 15-20 minutes until the cakes are golden brown.
Cakes can be kept for 2-3 days in an airtight container or frozen for 2-3 months.
REMEMBER …
* When you’re giving your dog snacks or treats, always reduce the amount of food they get that day in their meals to account for the extra calories, in the same way that we might have a smaller breakfast if we know we’re having a big meal at lunchtime.
* Don’t let your dog eat the whole cake or batch in one go, as much as they might want to! Why not make smaller cupcakes that you can freeze in portion sizes and spread them out over a couple of months as a special treat!
* It’s important to remember to keep monitoring your dog’s weight so you know they’re eating the right amount of calories to keep them at the perfect, healthy weight.
